The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

To understand the novel better lets first discuss about the writer, F. Scott Fitzgerald

His complete name is Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald. He was an American novelist, essayist, and short story writer. He is famous for his novels depicting the flamboyance and excess of the Jazz Age and coined a new term in his short story collection Tales of the Jazz Age.

Novel, The Great Gatsby is written by an American author named F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. The story takes place during the Jazz Age in a location close to New York City called Long Island.

The novel depicts Nick Carraway, first person narrator, and his experiences with a very rich man named Jay Gatsby. Jay Gatsby is really interested in getting back together with his old girlfriend named Daisy Buchanan.

The inspiration of the novel came from author youthful romance with a socialite Ginevra King. He also attended very crazy parties on Long Island’s North Shore in 1922. Fitzgerald completed a rough draft of the novel in 1924.

When The Great Gatsby was released by Scribner’s in April 1925, most people who reviewed it liked it. However, some literary experts thought it wasn’t as good as F. Scott Fitzgerald’s earlier books like This Side of Paradise and The Beautiful and Damned.

In World War II, the popularity of the novel suddenly increased when the Council on Books in Wartime provided free copies to American soldiers serving abroad.

Fitzgerald conveys the hedonism of Jazz Age society by placing a relatable plotline within the historical context of the most raucous and flashiest era in American history.
